Coal Mine - Low Emissions Grant Application

The Challenge

Our metallurgical coal mine client in Queensland has embarked on a groundbreaking pilot that has the potential to significantly reduce normally occurring fugitive methane emissions. Given the fact that our client is a coal producer, moving into gas production as part of ongoing mining operations has a high risk profile but it comes with a large opportunity to reduce the mine’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

The Solution

Given the uncertainties and magnitude of challenge involved and Client's experience from an earlier pilot, the project needed further de-risking: Queensland Treasury offers a grant program specifically aimed at reducing GHG emissions for metallurgical coal mines. Our Executive Advisor was retained to lead the grant application for the Client to secure this funding by working through

  • Capture of fugitive methane emissions through gas-drainage prior to mining operations
  • Economic evaluation of drainage project
  • Screening of potential beneficial use technologies beyond flaring such as power generation
  • Describing the subsurface risks in developing such a scheme

 Our Impact

Devbase’s Executive Advisor was able to mature the grant application to a point where the Client has a clear pathway to what is required to complete the grant application.
